Secret Service Involved in Two High-Profile Security Incidents in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Secret Service officers responded to an armed confrontation near the White House on May 4, 2026, resulting in an officer-involved shooting that injured a suspect and a juvenile bystander.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. near 15th Street and Independence Avenue SW, close to the Washington Monument and National Mall. Uniformed Secret Service personnel approached a suspicious armed individual, who fled on foot and opened fire on officers. Law enforcement returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. A juvenile bystander was also hit, suffering a non-life-threatening graze wound believed to have come from the suspect’s gunfire. Both victims were transported to area hospitals.
The White House was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution. The shooting occurred just minutes after Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade had left the area. Secret Service Deputy Director Mathew C. Quinn confirmed the event stemmed from a direct confrontation with an armed individual. No officers were reported injured.
This latest incident comes just over a week after another serious security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, allegedly stormed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton armed with multiple firearms, knives, and ammunition, attempting to reach the ballroom where President Donald Trump and top officials were present.
Allen fired at Secret Service agents before being subdued. He faces federal charges, including attempting to assassinate the president. He pleaded not guilty in court and remains in custody, with prosecutors seeking preventive detention. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
These events underscore the persistent security challenges surrounding protected sites and major political gatherings in the nation’s capital. Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
