Trump, Melania Face Mid-Air Scare During UK State Visit as ‘Tech-Prosperity Deal’ Unveiled

LONDON — President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were forced to make an emergency landing aboard Marine One during a high-stakes state visit to the United Kingdom on Thursday, due to a hydraulics issue with the presidential helicopter.

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the helicopter encountered a technical malfunction shortly after departing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Chequers estate. The aircraft made a precautionary landing at a nearby airfield rather than proceeding directly to Stansted Airport. The Trumps were transferred to a support helicopter and continued their journey without further incident, arriving safely to meet their scheduled commitments. The 20-minute flight was delayed to roughly 40 minutes total.

The episode occurred amid a historic second state visit hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The trip aimed to strengthen the longstanding U.S.-U.K. “special relationship” through both ceremonial events and substantive diplomatic and economic discussions.

Earlier in the day, the President met with King Charles at Windsor Castle before traveling to Chequers for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Starmer. The private meetings covered a range of global issues, including the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, environmental policy, and international debates over free speech protections.

The centerpiece of the visit was the formal unveiling of a major bilateral agreement dubbed the “Tech-Prosperity Deal.” Starmer described the pact as a £250 billion ($340 billion) mutual investment framework focused on deregulation, cutting-edge innovation, and technological collaboration. Trump highlighted that the deal has already spurred more than $350 billion in private sector commitments.

A flagship element is a $136 billion investment package involving U.S. asset manager Blackstone, led by Steve Schwarzman. The agreement also advances cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, 6G technology, and civil nuclear energy.

In a key commercial announcement, American firm X Energy and British energy company Centrica unveiled plans to deploy modular nuclear reactors across the UK. The initiative is projected to generate $50 billion in economic value, create up to 2,500 jobs, and provide clean power for approximately 1.5 million homes — critical infrastructure to support surging AI energy demands.

Addressing business leaders including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Trump emphasized the urgent need for expanded electricity generation to fuel AI growth. He praised the UK’s world-class aerospace supply chain and drew historical parallels to British mathematician Alan Turing, stating the partnership would position the U.S. and UK to lead in future technologies.

The President departed the UK on Friday, returning to the White House after concluding a series of high-level business receptions. Officials from both nations described the visit as a significant step toward enhancing Western technological sovereignty and industrial competitiveness.
