Kimmel Faces Backlash After Trump Joke Before WHCA Shooting…

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is under intense scrutiny following a controversial joke about former First Lady Melania Trump, delivered during a monologue just days before a security breach and attempted assassination at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

In his routine preceding the April 25 event, Kimmel remarked that Melania Trump possessed “the glow of an expectant widow,” a comment referencing the age difference between the former first lady and her husband, President Donald Trump. The joke has drawn widespread criticism for its tone, particularly in light of the violent incident that followed at the Washington Hilton.

On the night of the dinner, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, allegedly attempted to breach security, armed with a shotgun and pistol. Authorities say Allen fired at a Secret Service officer, who was protected by body armor. Allen faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the president and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Prosecutors have indicated additional charges are expected, with Allen potentially facing life in prison if convicted.

President Trump and Melania Trump publicly condemned the remark, calling on ABC to terminate Kimmel’s employment, describing the joke as extremely insensitive given the subsequent attack.

The backlash has extended across party lines. Former Obama senior adviser David Axelrod called the comment “tasteless” and encouraged Kimmel to apologize. Inside ABC, an anonymous staffer questioned the network’s direction, contrasting “cruel” programming with more positive, community-focused content. An entertainment lawyer representing industry talent criticized Disney for moving away from “wholesome American values.”

This is not Kimmel’s first controversy. Last fall, he faced temporary suspension and protests after comments related to the killing of a conservative activist, prompting concerns from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. Despite the incidents, Disney extended Kimmel’s contract through May 2027.

The episode presents an early challenge for new Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, who succeeded Bob Iger. As public outrage grows and subscription cancellations are reported, the network must navigate questions about the boundaries of political humor in an era of heightened polarization.

Media analysts note the incident highlights ongoing debates over the role of late-night comedy and the potential impact of inflammatory rhetoric on national discourse. Federal authorities continue to investigate Allen’s motives as the case proceeds.
