State Department Cracks Down on International Birth Tourism Networks

Ā The U.S. State Department has dismantled multiple overseas birth tourism networks operating across West Africa, Europe, and North Africa, authorities announced this week.

According to officials, embassies identified sophisticated schemes in which foreign nationals allegedly used false documentation and coordinated support to secure U.S. visas with the primary intent of giving birth on American soil. The practice aims to obtain U.S. citizenship for their children under the 14th Amendment. The Daily Wire was the first to report the operations.

In West Africa, consular officers shut down at least one network, revoked visas of participants, and are partnering with local authorities to identify and disrupt similar activities. In Europe, one embassy uncovered more than 400 suspected cases dating back to 2024, linked to at least six companies that provided coaching on visa interviews, arranged U.S. accommodations, and facilitated childbirth plans. The network was disrupted, visas were revoked, and permanent travel bans were issued against several individuals.

In North Africa, more than 100 visas were revoked for individuals suspected of similar birth tourism travel. Consular teams collaborated with law enforcement and utilized data analysis to detect patterns and patterns of abuse.

State Department officials emphasized that a U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right, and visitor visas may not be used primarily to obtain citizenship for a child through birth in the United States. ā€œWe are acting globally to stop these abuses and hold accountable those exploiting the system,ā€ they said.

The actions come amid ongoing legal challenges to President Trump’s January 2025 executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for children of non-citizens. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the order in late June or early July.

The crackdown underscores the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen visa integrity and protect the U.S. immigration system from exploitation.
