JD Vance with tears in their eyes make the sad announcement

UK Veterans and Leaders Hit Back at Vance Over Allied Forces Remarks

British veterans, senior military figures, and politicians have voiced strong criticism of U.S. Vice President JD Vance following comments perceived as downplaying the contributions of allied troops in recent conflicts.

The remarks, made during a Fox News interview, came as Vance argued that a proposed U.S. economic stake in Ukraine would offer a stronger security guarantee than “20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.” Critics interpreted the statement as a slight against longstanding NATO partners like the UK and France.

Opposition figures and former service members highlighted Britain’s sacrifices, pointing to the 636 UK personnel killed in operations in Iraq and Afghanistan while serving alongside American forces. Former Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer and ex-SAS soldier Andy McNab condemned the comments for showing insufficient appreciation of allied sacrifices.

Retired military leaders, including Lord West and former Chief of the General Staff General Sir Patrick Sanders, stressed the deep history of U.S.-UK cooperation and shared losses across decades of joint operations. Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge described the remarks as “deeply disrespectful,” while former Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and other lawmakers called for greater acknowledgment of the transatlantic alliance’s joint contributions.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s pride in its armed forces and the importance of mutual respect among allies.

Vance later clarified that his comments were not directed at the United Kingdom or France, both of which “have fought bravely alongside the US over the last 20 years, and beyond,” dismissing contrary interpretations as “absurdly dishonest.”

The controversy has ignited broader debate over diplomatic rhetoric and the need to properly honor the military contributions of America’s closest partners.
