WASHINGTON, D.C. — The United States Navy has officially identified the brave American airman who tragically went missing over the turbulent waters of the Arabian Sea earlier this month, putting a name and a face to the human cost of America’s ongoing defense of freedom in the Middle East.
Commander Gabriel Edwards, a highly decorated military veteran and the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat (HSC) Squadron 5, was lost after his MH-60S Seahawk helicopter was forced to make a sudden and harrowing emergency landing on July 1. He was a native of Oakland, Oregon, and a patriot who dedicated two decades of his life to the defense of the United States.
The heartbreaking announcement on Wednesday came after the Navy made the difficult decision to call off the search on July 5. The cessation of the rescue mission followed an exhaustive, 102-hour round-the-clock effort that spanned an area covering more than 14,000 square miles of open ocean.
The sheer scale of the search operation was a testament to the U.S. military’s unwavering commitment to leaving no man behind. The massive armada deployed to find Cmdr. Edwards included ships and aircraft from two fully equipped carrier strike groups, two patrol and reconnaissance squadrons flying state-of-the-art P-8A Poseidon aircraft, and several specialized Air Force assets.
While three other crew members were successfully retrieved from the waters following the emergency landing and are currently in stable condition, the sea ultimately claimed the life of their commanding officer.

The official cause of the emergency landing remains under strict investigation by military officials. In a carefully worded statement, the Navy noted that “there is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action.”

Cmdr. Edwards leaves behind a legacy of absolute dedication to the United States Armed Forces. He earned his commission through the Naval ROTC program after graduating from Norfolk State University in 2006, eventually earning his highly coveted aviator “Wings of Gold” in 2008 as a helicopter pilot.
Over the course of his distinguished 20-year career, Edwards served with some of the Navy’s most elite units, including HSC-22 (the “Sea Knights”), HSC-84 (the “Red Wolves”), and HSC-85 (the “Firehawks”). He also served a critical role within Naval Special Warfare Group 4 as the air-to-ground fires officer and a Joint Terminal Attack Controller. In July 2025, he took command of HSC-5, the “Nightdippers,” which would serve as his final and proudest command.
His personal awards reflect a career of exceptional bravery and skill, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Underscoring his stellar reputation among the top brass, Edwards had already been selected for a well-deserved promotion to Captain in Fiscal Year 2027.
He leaves behind his grieving wife, Rebecca Edwards, and their two children.
“We are profoundly grateful to every Sailor, aviator, and Airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home,” Rebecca Edwards said in a moving public statement. “Gabe has dedicated his life to serving his country with honor, courage, and commitment.”
Capt. Matthew Lewis, the commander of Carrier Air Wing 7, echoed those sentiments, calling Edwards “the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years.”
“Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family, who should know that Gabe led his squadron, the HSC-5 ‘Nightdippers,’ with integrity and fortitude,” Capt. Lewis added.
The Rising Toll of the Iranian Threat
The tragic loss of Cmdr. Edwards does not happen in a vacuum. It raises the official American toll of war dead to 14 in the ongoing, high-stakes military conflict with the hostile regime in Iran.

The danger faced by American pilots and sailors in this theater was recently highlighted by a massive national security breach. President Donald Trump previously promised to track down and jail a leaker within the government who criminally disclosed the details of a live, highly classified rescue operation of a downed American pilot in Iran. The President blasted the act of treason, emphasizing that such unauthorized disclosures during active missions pose a severe and deadly security threat to American service members operating behind enemy lines.
As the military mourns the loss of Cmdr. Edwards, the administration is continuing its strategy of projecting “peace through strength.” Vice President JD Vance recently noted that the United States still fundamentally desires a diplomatic solution to the regional crisis, while President Trump remains committed to making a strong, America-First deal with Iran—provided the regime permanently halts its campaign of terror.
