A major security scare disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on the night of April 25, 2026, after an armed man attempted to force his way into the event at the Washington Hilton. President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior administration officials, lawmakers, and hundreds of journalists were swiftly evacuated as authorities responded.

The annual gala, often called the “Nerd Prom,” had been underway for only about 20 minutes when the incident unfolded. Federal officials identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Allen, described as a teacher, video game developer, and graduate of the California Institute of Technology, was carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives as he tried to push through a secured checkpoint and advance toward the main ballroom.

U.S. Secret Service agents intercepted Allen in the hotel lobby before he could reach the crowded room. A violent struggle ensued, during which gunfire broke out. One Secret Service agent was struck at close range, but the agent’s ballistic vest prevented life-threatening injuries. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital and reported to be in stable condition. Allen sustained only minor injuries and was taken into federal custody.

Security teams immediately ordered a full evacuation of the venue while heavily armed officers searched the hotel for any additional threats. Organizers briefly considered resuming the program, but the White House Correspondents’ Association ultimately canceled the evening, citing ongoing security concerns. Officials indicated the dinner is expected to be rescheduled with substantially enhanced protections.

President Trump praised the Secret Service for its rapid response, saying the agents prevented what could have been a far more serious tragedy. He condemned the attempted attack and supported the decision to prioritize the safety of those in attendance.

Federal investigators have opened a broad inquiry into Allen’s background, possible motives, and recent activities. Authorities are searching his California residence and reviewing writings he reportedly sent to family members shortly before the incident. Investigators currently believe he acted alone and have found no immediate evidence of a wider plot or continuing threat.

The episode has intensified scrutiny of security measures surrounding major political gatherings in the nation’s capital. Officials are expected to examine how an armed individual managed to get so close to one of Washington’s most closely protected annual events, prompting calls for tighter protocols at future high-profile dinners and similar functions.
