WASHINGTON — An armed assailant breached security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, 2026, triggering a chaotic evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and dozens of top government officials and journalists at the Washington Hilton.
The suspect, identified as Cole Allen, 31, a Caltech graduate and teacher from Torrance, California, rushed a security checkpoint approximately 20 minutes after the presidential couple’s entrance. Armed with a shotgun and multiple knives, Allen was confronted and subdued by Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby before he could reach the main ballroom. During the confrontation, he fired at close range, striking one Secret Service agent. The agent was saved by his bulletproof vest and was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll described Allen as a lone actor and a registered hotel guest. There was no indication of additional threats to the public. Federal investigators are searching Allen’s California residence and examining his background for a possible motive. He faces multiple federal charges, including attempted assassination of the President.
President Trump praised the Secret Service’s swift response, calling the agents’ actions “fantastic” and condemning the attacker as a “sick” individual. Trump initially pushed to continue the event but ultimately agreed to its cancellation. The White House Correspondents’ Association formally canceled the dinner around 9:45 p.m. A rescheduled event is expected within the next 30 days.
