ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live Off Air Without Explanation

ABC Abruptly Cancels ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Episode Citing Host’s Personal Matter

LOS ANGELES — ABC pulled Thursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! at the last minute due to a personal matter involving the host, leaving scheduled guests, studio audiences, and viewers without explanation as the network aired a rerun instead.

The long-running late-night program had been scheduled to feature actor David Duchovny, Stranger Things star Joe Keery, and singer Madison Beer. Beer confirmed the cancellation herself on X shortly after 6:30 p.m. ET, stating that her performance had been rescheduled for a later date due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

When the show’s regular 11:35 p.m. ET slot arrived, audiences tuning in were met with a repeat episode from October 28 rather than a fresh broadcast. ABC provided no on-air clarification or immediate public statement regarding the decision. Audience members who had obtained tickets received an email from the show’s staff confirming the postponement and offering to reschedule for a future date.

The abrupt cancellation marks a rare disruption for Kimmel, who has hosted the program for more than two decades and maintains one of the most consistent schedules in late-night television. Episodes are typically taped Monday through Thursday afternoons at the show’s Hollywood studio.

This incident is the second unexpected interruption for Jimmy Kimmel Live! in recent months. In September 2025, the program was temporarily suspended after Kimmel delivered a controversial monologue addressing the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel’s remarks, which criticized what he described as political opportunism by Kirk’s supporters, prompted several ABC affiliates owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group to pull the episode. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr publicly criticized the comments, and the network sidelined the show for several days before its return on September 23.

Upon returning, Kimmel delivered an emotional segment emphasizing themes of grace and forgiveness, referencing a statement by Kirk’s widow, Erika. He did not issue a direct apology for the original remarks.

Kimmel has previously taken time off for family matters, including his son Billy’s heart surgery in 2017 and the birth of his granddaughter earlier this year. The program also observed a planned hiatus in late October 2025.

As of Friday morning, ABC had not released additional details about the nature of the personal matter or when new episodes would resume. The network’s silence has fueled online speculation, though no further information has been confirmed.

The episode highlights the challenges facing late-night television in balancing personal circumstances, programming consistency, and occasional political controversies. Despite periodic disruptions, Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains a cornerstone of ABC’s late-night lineup under an extended contract.
