Kai Trump Opens Up About Her Relationship With Her Grandfather, Donald Trump

Kai Madison Trump was born on May 12, 2007, in New York City, the first child of Donald Trump Jr. and Vanessa Trump and the eldest grandchild of Donald Trump. She was named for her great-grandfather, Danish jazz musician Kai Ewans. Early years were spent in New York among siblings and relatives close in age, including her uncle Barron. Family routines, golf, and time with her grandparents shaped those years more than cameras did. Even as the Trump name drew national attention, she stayed mostly out of view until later in her teens.

She first appeared more often in official family photos during the 2016 campaign. The larger public introduction came in July 2024, when she spoke at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, days after her grandfather survived an assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Then 17, she told the hall she wanted people to see the private grandfather: the man who slipped her candy, asked about school, printed her honor-roll notice to show friends, and called mid-class to talk golf. On the course, she said, he tried to get in her head when they were not partners. “I have to remind him I’m a Trump, too.” She called the shooting heartbreaking and said many people had “put my grandpa through hell,” yet he was “still standing.” The remarks mixed affection with a political moment that had already made her family impossible to ignore.

Golf is the through-line. She has competed on junior circuits in Florida, helped The Benjamin School win consecutive district titles, and won ladies’ club honors at a Trump course in West Palm Beach. In August 2024 she announced a verbal commitment to the University of Miami women’s golf team; she later signed with the Hurricanes for the 2026–27 season and arrived as a freshman. In November 2025 she accepted a sponsor exemption for an LPGA debut at The Annika, missed the cut, and treated the week as experience rather than a finished product. As of fall 2026 she is in Coral Gables, balancing classes, team golf, and a large social-media following built around vlogs and the game.

That visibility has not changed the line she draws in interviews. She has said she prefers to blend in with classmates, that people often would not know who she is, and that she wants results on the scorecard to speak first. The family bond remains public and private at once: competitive rounds with her grandfather, pride he has shown in her grades and titles, and a willingness to describe him in ordinary terms even when the setting is a convention hall.

At 19, Kai Trump is still early in both college and competitive golf. The path she is on—Florida junior ranks, a Power conference roster, occasional pro-am and tour invitations—is her own even when the last name guarantees an audience. Whether the next chapter is measured in birdies, views, or something quieter, the story that began with an early arrival in New York is now being written on campus and on the course.
