Chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner: Armed Intruder Prompts Evacuation of President Trump

WASHINGTON — The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an annual gathering of journalists, politicians, and Washington elites often dubbed the “Nerd Prom,” descended into chaos on April 25, 2026, when an armed gunman breached security at the Washington Hilton, forcing the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and dozens of high-ranking officials.

The incident unfolded around 8:50 p.m., roughly 20 minutes after the president and first lady made their formal entrance into the ballroom. According to law enforcement officials, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, rushed a security checkpoint and advanced aggressively toward the main event space. Allen, a Caltech graduate and teacher, was armed with a shotgun and multiple knives.

Secret Service agents swiftly intervened in the hotel lobby, tackling and subduing the suspect before he could reach the ballroom. During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. President Trump later praised the agent’s quick thinking and the protection provided by his bulletproof vest, which prevented life-threatening injury. The agent was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll described Allen as a “lone actor” and confirmed he had been a registered guest at the hotel. There is no indication of additional threats to the public. Federal authorities are searching Allen’s California residence as they work to determine a motive.

Following the breach, President Trump, the First Lady, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and other senior administration officials and lawmakers were quickly evacuated for safety. Organizers initially attempted to continue the program, but the White House Correspondents’ Association formally canceled the dinner by 9:45 p.m. The event is expected to be rescheduled within the next 30 days.

In remarks after the incident, President Trump condemned the attacker as a “sick” individual and commended law enforcement for their rapid response. He also noted a moment of unexpected unity among attendees, describing the shared experience as “very beautiful.”

The security breach has renewed concerns about protecting high-profile political events while preserving their role as forums for press freedom and bipartisan engagement. Allen remains in federal custody facing serious charges, including attempted assassination.
