Owner Of California ‘Trump House’ Fighting For Life After Brutal Attack

Kerry George Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran whose elaborately decorated Escondido home became a local landmark of American patriotism and support for former President Donald Trump, died days after a violent assault outside his residence, authorities and family confirmed.

Sheron succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night, May 24 or 25, 2026, at Palomar Medical Center following the May 20 attack near the intersection of East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street. He had remained in critical condition in the ICU since the incident. His death has sent shockwaves through the North County San Diego community, where his home—adorned with dozens of American flags, military insignia, pro-Trump banners, and MAGA memorabilia—stood as an unapologetic symbol of pride for supporters and a point of contention for critics.

According to the Escondido Police Department, officers responded to reports of an assault in progress shortly after 2 p.m. on May 20. They found Sheron suffering from catastrophic injuries. A utility worker who witnessed the attack intervened, assisting officers in restraining the suspect and sustaining injuries in the process. Sheron was rushed to the hospital, where his condition deteriorated rapidly.

His wife, Maria Garcia (also referred to as Maria Sheron in some reports), shared a heartbreaking update with reporters. “He tried to kill my husband,” she told local media. “It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hate… what heart, the black heart.” Garcia indicated the family had faced prior harassment and threats linked to the home’s visible displays but never anticipated violence. She suggested the attack may have been politically motivated, fueled by hostility toward the patriotic and pro-Trump symbols.

Thomas Caleb Butler, 32, a Navy veteran from Escondido, was arrested shortly after fleeing the scene. He was initially charged with attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats, and battery. Following Sheron’s death, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office upgraded the charges to include murder. Butler has pleaded not guilty and remains held without bail at the Vista Detention Facility. Prosecutors allege the assault was unprovoked, with Butler punching Sheron multiple times, including after he collapsed.

Accounts from those close to Butler describe him as struggling with severe mental health challenges, including PTSD and paranoia following his Navy service, during which he served as an information systems technician from 2011 to 2023. A friend told reporters Butler had been taking medication but his condition had worsened; he was unemployed and increasingly isolated, often spending time with hobbies like Legos and Star Wars. Police have not publicly confirmed a motive, and the investigation continues, examining all factors including mental health.

The incident prompted swift reaction from California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa, who called for a “full and immediate investigation.” Issa noted on X that Trump supporters are “routinely the victims of leftist violence all across the country.”

Community response has been profound. Neighbors and supporters gathered for vigils outside the “Trump House,” waving flags, leaving flowers, and sharing memories of Sheron as a friendly veteran who often sat outside smiling, waving to motorists, and encouraging honks. One neighbor described him as a patriot first and foremost, deeply committed to freedom of speech.

Sheron’s home had long attracted attention in the San Diego area, serving as both a celebration of American pride and a flashpoint for political tensions. The tragedy has reignited broader discussions about political violence, free expression, mental health support for veterans, and public safety amid polarized times.

A GoFundMe established for the family highlights the devastating impact: “His loss has devastated our family beyond words.” As Butler awaits further court proceedings, Sheron’s family, friends, and the wider community mourn a man remembered for his unwavering patriotism and service to the nation.
