U.S. Secret Service personnel were involved in an officer-involved shooting near the White House on Wednesday that left a juvenile with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
The incident occurred at the intersection of 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. The juvenile victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. In response, the White House was briefly placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
Secret Service Deputy Director Mathew C. Quinn confirmed the confrontation involved an armed individual and Secret Service Police officers. The shooting took place just minutes after the vice president had left the area, according to officials.
This latest security incident comes amid heightened concerns following another breach just over a week earlier at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, faces federal charges after allegedly entering the Washington Hilton armed with multiple weapons and attempting to reach the ballroom where President Donald J. Trump was attending the event alongside Cabinet officials and members of the press.
During Allen’s initial court appearance last week, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jocelyn Ballantine told the judge that Allen “attempted to assassinate the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump.” Prosecutors requested his pretrial detention, and authorities indicated that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
The two incidents in quick succession underscore ongoing security challenges surrounding high-profile events and government sites in the nation’s capital. Both matters remain under active investigation by federal authorities.
