Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as Director of National Intelligence on Friday, citing the need to support her husband following his diagnosis with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. Her departure marks the latest personnel change in President Donald Trump’s second-term administration.
In a formal resignation letter posted on X, Gabbard expressed profound gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity to lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) for the past year and a half. “I am deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me,” she wrote. She informed Trump of her decision during a meeting in the Oval Office and will step down effective June 30.
Gabbard detailed the personal circumstances driving her choice: “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer. He faces major challenges in the coming weeks and months. At this time, I must step away from public service to be by his side and fully support him through this battle.” She added that she could not ask him to face the fight alone while continuing in the demanding role.
Trump praised Gabbard’s service, stating she had done “a great job” and would be missed. Principal Deputy Director Aaron Lukas is expected to serve as acting DNI in the interim, with further leadership announcements anticipated.
As DNI, Gabbard oversaw the coordination of the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies amid ongoing national security priorities. Her exit comes as the administration continues to navigate foreign policy and domestic challenges.
