Security Breach Disrupts White House Correspondentsā Association Dinner
Ā Gunfire erupted outside the main ballroom at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night, abruptly halting the annual White House Correspondentsā Association Dinner and triggering the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials.
The incident occurred shortly after the gala began, as attendees settled in for an evening of satire and networking. Secret Service agents swiftly escorted the president and protected figures from the stage amid panic, while guests took cover under tables. No fatalities were reported, though one Secret Service agent was struck at close range. The agent survived without life-threatening injuries thanks to a bulletproof vest.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California. According to law enforcement and photographic evidence, the shirtless Allen charged a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby while armed with a shotgun, handgun, multiple knives, and other weapons. He was apprehended shortly afterward. Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll described Allen as a lone actor and a registered hotel guest, stating there was no immediate indication of a broader threat.
Federal prosecutors have charged Allen with attempted assassination of the president, along with related firearms and violence offenses. Investigators searched his California residence as they probe his motive. Allen has pleaded not guilty.
In remarks following the chaos, President Trump commended law enforcement for their āfantastic jobā and rapid response. He referred to the suspect as a āsick personā and expressed surprise at the unity displayed by journalists, politicians, and guests during the crisis. āIt was very beautiful,ā Trump said, highlighting a rare moment of togetherness at an event traditionally focused on freedom of the press.
Organizers initially considered continuing the program but canceled the dinner by 9:45 p.m. Trump had advocated for proceeding with his planned remarks critiquing the media. The White House Correspondentsā Association later announced the event would be rescheduled within 30 days with enhanced security measures.
The breach marks one of the most serious security incidents at a major Washington political gathering in recent years. It has prompted an immediate review of protocols at the Washington Hilton and for similar high-profile events, underscoring ongoing challenges in safeguarding public figures amid elevated political tensions.
