Marco Rubio Recalls Bizarre Air Force One Incident After Officials Feared Passenger Might Be Dead…

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has described an awkward and tense episode aboard Air Force One in which he and fellow senior officials spent roughly 90 minutes trying to determine whether a motionless passenger was merely asleep or experiencing a medical emergency.

Rubio recounted the incident during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, calling it an uncomfortable mix of uncertainty, concern, and hesitation. The episode occurred on a return flight from China. Officials noticed an individual lying in a conference room who appeared completely unresponsive despite noise, conversation, and activity around them.

For about an hour and a half, those present debated whether to intervene or summon a physician. Rubio explained that the hesitation arose partly from the social awkwardness of waking someone who might simply be in a deep sleep. Doing so unnecessarily risked embarrassment. Yet leaving an unresponsive person unattended carried far more serious potential consequences.

Concern grew because the individual showed little reaction to surrounding stimuli and displayed an irregular or hard-to-detect breathing pattern. Rubio noted difficulty seeing consistent chest movement and questioned how such a sparse respiration rate could sustain life. Ultimately the situation resolved without emergency action. “Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said.

He declined to identify the passenger, and no independent confirmation of the individual’s identity has emerged. That omission quickly fueled online jokes and speculation, with some social-media users floating various names. None of those claims has been substantiated, and Rubio offered no identifying details.

The anecdote drew extra notice because Rubio had earlier faced questions from lawmakers about whether he had ever seen President Donald Trump fall asleep during official meetings. At a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu pressed him on the subject. Rubio replied that he had never personally observed the president sleeping and instead characterized Trump as maintaining an unusually rigorous schedule. Lieu later pointed to video footage he said showed Trump with closed eyes during a meeting while Rubio spoke. Rubio stood by his earlier statement.

The Air Force One episode, by contrast, was not framed as political controversy. Rubio presented it simply as an unusual moment in which senior officials struggled to distinguish ordinary deep sleep from a possible medical crisis. With the passenger ultimately confirmed to be unharmed, the incident passed without further consequences.

Still, the story provided a rare window into the odd situations that can arise on the presidential aircraft, where even an apparently ordinary nap can place high-ranking officials in an unexpectedly delicate position.
