WASHINGTON — The White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, long known as Washington’s “nerd prom,” descended into panic on Saturday night, April 25, 2026, when an armed man charged a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton as President Donald Trump and more than 2,000 journalists, officials, and guests gathered in the ballroom below.
The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was a registered guest at the hotel. Authorities say he left his room carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, ran through a magnetometer as agents were beginning to take it down, and headed toward stairs leading to the ballroom. The confrontation lasted only seconds. Gunfire erupted. One Secret Service officer was struck in the chest at close range; a ballistic vest stopped the buckshot, and he survived with bruising. Allen was tackled, pinned to the floor, and arrested in the lobby. Photographs later showed him shirtless and restrained.
Officials described Allen as a lone actor. There was no indication of a wider plot. Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said the public was not under ongoing threat after the arrest. Investigators later recovered writings Allen sent to relatives minutes before the attack in which he called himself a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and aired grievances against Trump administration policies. He was later charged with attempting to assassinate the president; he has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent.
Inside the ballroom, shots were heard as the evening was just getting underway. Guests dove under tables. Secret Service agents rushed Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other officials off the stage and out of the room. No one inside the dinner was struck.
Trump later praised the speed of the response, saying law enforcement “did a fantastic job” and acted “very quickly.” He called Allen a “sick person” and said authorities were searching the suspect’s California residence. Reflecting on the scene after the evacuation, the president said an event dedicated to freedom of speech had, in a grim way, brought journalists and both parties together. He described that unity as “very beautiful.”
Organizers initially hoped to resume the program. By about 9:45 p.m., the dinner was canceled. Trump said he had “fought like hell” to continue so he could deliver prepared remarks criticizing the press corps. The association later rescheduled the gala; it was ultimately held in July at a different venue under tighter security.
The episode ranks among the most serious security breaches at a high-profile Washington gathering in years and prompted an immediate review of protocols at the Hilton, the same hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981. Officials emphasized that layered security stopped Allen before he reached the ballroom. Still, the fact that a hotel guest could approach a presidential event with firearms has fueled questions about how perimeters are drawn when the president attends a public hotel.
The investigation continues. The wounded agent recovered. The dinner that night did not.
