Karmelo Anthony Sentenced Following the Tragic Death of a Teen Football Star…

In a Collin County courtroom on June 9, 2026, a jury found 19-year-old Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf.

The verdict arrived after roughly three hours of deliberation. Jurors rejected Anthony’s self-defense claim and a “sudden passion” argument that could have reduced the sentence. The ruling closed a trial that had drawn national attention and intensified debates over race, youth violence, and school safety.

Austin Metcalf, a Memorial High School junior, was a standout football linebacker and track athlete known for his drive and easy laugh. On April 2, 2025, at a Frisco ISD track meet at David Kuykendall Stadium, he and Anthony—a Centennial High School student who also competed in track and football—clashed under a team tent during a rainstorm. Witnesses described a heated exchange over Anthony’s refusal to leave the Memorial tent; Metcalf pushed him, and Anthony stabbed him once in the chest. Metcalf died at the scene in his twin brother Hunter’s arms. Anthony told officers he had been protecting himself.

Anthony sat largely motionless as the sentence was read. For Metcalf’s family and supporters, the outcome acknowledged the irreversible loss of a young life with clear potential. For others, the 35-year term—far short of life but still decades—raised questions about whether it constituted justice, especially amid online racial framing of a case both sides insisted was not about race. Anthony is Black; Metcalf was white. No Black jurors were seated.

Appeals are underway. Anthony’s legal team has sought a new trial and secured the recusal of the original judge; a retired jurist now oversees post-conviction matters. In the meantime, empty seats in classrooms and locker rooms, and the ongoing legal fight, leave a community suspended between grief, anger, and unresolved doubt.
