Kimmel Doubles Down On Melania ‘Expectant Widow’ Insult

Jimmy Kimmel Faces Backlash Over Melania Trump Joke Following Assassination Attempt

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel addressed criticism Monday night after First Lady Melania Trump demanded his firing over a joke that referred to her as an “expectant widow.” The remark, made during a sketch on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, came just days before an armed suspect tried to breach security at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner where President Donald Trump was speaking.

In the April 23 monologue segment parodying the upcoming dinner, Kimmel said of the First Lady: “Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.” He later described the line as a light roast centered on the age difference between the president, who is nearly 80, and his younger wife.

Following the Saturday night incident at the Washington Hilton, both President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump condemned the joke as hateful rhetoric that could incite violence. Melania Trump issued a statement calling for Kimmel’s dismissal from ABC, while the president echoed her demand.

In his April 28 opening monologue, Kimmel pushed back against the criticism. “It was a very light roast joke about the fact that he’s almost 80 and she’s younger than I am,” he said. “It was not—by any stretch of the definition—a call to assassination.” He maintained that the joke was about the couple’s age gap and Melania’s appearance, adding that “they know that.”

Kimmel acknowledged the stress Melania Trump has faced, particularly over the weekend, but suggested the conversation about violent rhetoric should begin with her husband. “I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject,” he said. “A great place to start to dial that back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it.”

He also apologized to those affected by the assassination attempt. “Just because no one got killed doesn’t mean it wasn’t traumatic and scary, and we should come together,” Kimmel stated. However, he rejected any connection between his joke and the incident, sarcastically suggesting investigators look into a “psychic lady” instead.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, faces serious federal charges including attempted assassination of the president, discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, and transporting a firearm across state lines. According to court documents, Allen entered the Hilton armed with a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory 1911 .38-caliber pistol. He allegedly sent a manifesto to family members beforehand, criticizing Trump harshly and expressing intent to target him and members of his administration.

Allen made his initial court appearance Monday in a blue jail uniform and has been formally advised of the charges. Authorities say he fired shots before being stopped by Secret Service and law enforcement. No one in the main ballroom was killed, though the event left attendees shaken.

The episode has reignited debates over the boundaries of political comedy, free speech, and the tone of public discourse in an already polarized climate. While Kimmel defended his remarks under the First Amendment, the Trumps argued that certain jokes cross into dangerous territory, especially amid documented threats against the president.
