First Lady Jill Biden Retires from Teaching After 40-Year Career
Washington, D.C. — After more than four decades shaping young minds, First Lady Jill Biden has announced her retirement from the classroom. She taught her final class at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in December 2024, bringing a long and dedicated chapter in education to a close.
Biden shared the emotional news during a virtual national thank-you event for educators on December 16, 2024. “Last Thursday, I taught my last class of the semester and my final class ever at Northern Virginia Community College,” she told colleagues. “I will always love this profession, which is why I continued to teach full-time while serving as your First Lady.”
Her connection to NOVA began in 2009, when she joined the faculty as an English and writing instructor. For 15 years, she balanced her demanding role as Second Lady and then First Lady with her commitment to students, often arriving on campus straight from official duties. This tenure formed the cornerstone of a remarkable 40-year career that started in high school classrooms and extended through community colleges in Delaware and Virginia.
In her farewell remarks, Biden described teaching as “the work of my life.” She expressed profound gratitude to fellow educators, saying it had been an honor to stand beside them in the classroom. While calling her time as First Lady “the honor of my life,” she emphasized that her true calling remained in education. She praised teachers nationwide for their resilience, dedication, and unwavering focus on students.
The announcement comes as President Joe Biden and the First Lady prepare to leave the White House in January 2025. Although Biden did not rule out future involvement in education advocacy, she will no longer teach formal classes at NOVA.
