ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live Off Air Without Explanation

ABC Abruptly Cancels ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Over Personal Matter

ABC pulled Thursday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! at the last minute, catching viewers, studio audiences, and scheduled guests off guard just hours before broadcast. The long-running late-night show had been scheduled to feature actor David Duchovny, Stranger Things star Joe Keery, and singer Madison Beer.

Beer broke the news herself on X at 6:33 p.m. ET, stating that her performance had to be rescheduled “to a later date” due to unforeseen circumstances. When 11:35 p.m. rolled around, audiences tuning in were met with a rerun from October 28 instead of Kimmel’s opening monologue. The network provided no on-air explanation and has remained silent on the matter publicly.

Ticket holders received an email from the show’s team confirming the postponement: “Tonight’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live has been postponed. Apologies for any inconvenience. Will contact you to reschedule for a future taping.”

The sudden cancellation is unusual for the program, which tapes Monday through Thursday afternoons and has maintained a remarkably steady schedule under Kimmel’s two-decade tenure. While Kimmel has taken occasional planned breaks — including time off for family events like the birth of his granddaughter and a 2017 hiatus during his son Billy’s heart surgery — last-minute disruptions are rare.

This marks the second unexpected interruption in recent months. In September 2025, the show was temporarily suspended after Kimmel’s monologue about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked widespread backlash. His comments criticizing “the MAGA gang” led Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group to pull the show from dozens of affiliates. FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr publicly criticized the remarks, and Disney reportedly sidelined the program for several days. Upon returning, Kimmel delivered an emotional segment on grace and forgiveness but stopped short of a direct apology.

As of Friday morning, ABC had issued no additional details about the latest “personal matter” or when new episodes would resume. The network’s silence has fueled online speculation, though no further information has been released.

The incident highlights the challenges late-night television faces in balancing consistent programming with the personal lives of its hosts and the occasional political controversies that can erupt without warning. Despite the disruptions, Jimmy Kimmel Live! remains a flagship program for ABC under an extended contract.
