Trump Shot Again in D.C. – Security Breach

A shooting outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton briefly threw one of the capital’s highest-profile gatherings into chaos before law enforcement stopped the suspect short of the ballroom.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen of California, appeared to be a lone actor and was likely staying at the hotel as a guest. Authorities said they did not believe the public faced a continuing threat after his arrest. The confrontation was intense: a Secret Service officer was struck at close range. President Trump later said the agent had been hit by a “very powerful gun,” but survived without life-threatening injuries because of a bulletproof vest. Trump praised officers for acting “very quickly” and doing a “fantastic job” before the situation could spread into the crowded ballroom.

At a later briefing, Trump called Allen a “sick person” and said investigators were already searching the suspect’s residence in California. He also described an unexpected sense of solidarity inside the room. The dinner, built around the idea of a free press, brought journalists and politicians together in a way he called “very beautiful.” He said the way attendees handled the crisis was one of the few positive notes on an otherwise grim night.

Organizers first hoped to continue the program. Trump said he had “fought like hell” to keep the dinner going, arguing he was ready to deliver a sharp critique of the press corps. Officials ultimately canceled the remainder of the evening and said the gala would be rescheduled within 30 days.

The episode, unfolding in the heart of Washington, ranks among the most serious security breaches at a major political gathering in the city in recent years. It immediately triggered a review of safety procedures at the Washington Hilton, including how a hotel guest was able to approach a Secret Service checkpoint armed and how quickly agents contained the threat before it reached the ballroom. Investigators continued to examine motive, weapons recovered at the scene, and whether any additional charges would follow.
