Marine One Carrying Donald and Melania Trump Makes Emergency Landing After Unexpected Incident…

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were forced to switch helicopters during their departure from the United Kingdom after pilots detected a hydraulics problem aboard Marine One. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the crew landed at a local airfield short of London Stansted Airport “out of an abundance of caution,” and that the president and first lady then boarded a support helicopter without incident.

The flight was meant to cover the short hop from the prime minister’s landing zone at Chequers to Stansted in about 20 minutes. Because of the diversion and the aircraft change, the trip took nearly 40 minutes. Leavitt’s account framed the stop as a precaution rather than an emergency, and the White House later confirmed that both arrived safely at Stansted before boarding Air Force One for the return to the United States. Trump arrived back at the White House on Thursday, September 18, 2025, ending his second state visit to Britain.

The landing was a late footnote to a visit built around ceremony and commerce. King Charles III and Queen Camilla received the Trumps at Windsor Castle, where the president spent the morning before traveling by Marine One to Chequers, the prime minister’s country residence. There he met Prime Minister Keir Starmer for talks on politics, trade, technology, energy, and investment.

Starmer presented the centerpiece as a package of investment flowing between the two countries worth about £250 billion, calling it an important step in tightening the economic relationship. The British government separately described a record set of commercial commitments tied to the visit, including £150 billion in newly announced American investment in the United Kingdom. After private discussions, Trump and Starmer joined business executives at a reception at Chequers. The conversation turned on technology, energy, and capital, and on how firms on both sides of the Atlantic might use the visit to lock in projects.

Starmer called the arrangement a “tech-prosperity deal.” Trump said it would open “billions of dollars of opportunities” and give the United States greater access to Britain’s aerospace supply chain. He cast the next stage as a science and technology partnership meant to draw governments, universities, and private companies into joint work, with artificial intelligence named as a principal field. He also pointed to quantum computing, fusion energy, 6G, and civil nuclear power, and argued that rising demand from AI and related industries makes new electricity generation essential. “You need the energy. You have to have the energy,” he said. “That’s one thing I learned very quickly. They need a lot of electricity.”

One concrete project he highlighted was an agreement between the American firm X-Energy and the British company Centrica to develop advanced modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom. The companies plan to build up to 12 of the reactors at Hartlepool as part of a wider British program aimed at a 6-gigawatt nuclear fleet. Officials said the Hartlepool project could supply enough electricity for as many as 1.5 million homes and create up to 2,500 jobs. The government said the broader package also drew commitments from companies in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, clean energy, and nuclear power.

Trump tied the nuclear and technology pieces to a longer historical line, saying that seven decades after Alan Turing helped open the field, the agreement would help the United States and Britain compete in artificial intelligence. The visit, in the White House and Downing Street telling, was meant to convert pageantry into contracts: trade access, research partnerships, and power plants large enough to feed the next wave of computing. The unscheduled landing did not change that itinerary’s close. After the switch of helicopters, the Trumps reached Stansted and left for Washington on schedule in all but the final half hour on the ground in England.
